VERONICA "RONI" SCHAACK CARLE
VERONICA "RONI" SCHAACK CARLE
Age: 101
Veronica Waegerle Schaack Carle was born on Easter Sunday, April 19, 1914 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada and peacefully crossed into eternal life on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Sylvan Crossing Assisted Living in Wausau with her loving family at her side and under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice. She devoted her life to raising and loving her big family and practiced her Christian faith by her gentleness, generosity and acceptance to all she met.
Funeral services for Veronica will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 5, 2016 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake with Father Otto Bucher officiating. Friends may visit with her family from 10:00 A.M. until time of services at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 5, 2016 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake. Cremainal inurnment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Rib Lake at a later date.
Veronica was the only daughter of George and Veronica Waegerle; she had one brother George Jr. and a half-brother John. She grew up in Lomira, Wisconsin where she graduated as valedictorian from Lomira High School and went on to beauty school. Upon completion of beautician school, she worked in Fond du Lac. When her father, who was a professional brewmeister moved to Medford, Wisconsin, she went with her parents and it was there that she met a young baseball player named Francis Schaack. They were married on August 26, 1935 in Holy Rosary Church in Medford. The Great Depression was still ravaging the country and their simple wedding reception was held in her parents’ home, where the furniture was moved and pushed back against the walls to accommodate the guests. In 1938, the young couple and their first child moved to Rib Lake, Wisconsin where a new branch of the State Bank of Medford had opened and a new job as assistant cashier awaited her husband, Francis.
Veronica and Francis lived in Rib Lake for many years where they raised their 6 children. Veronica was a full-time housewife and mother. She was also a frequent volunteer at the school, the public library and the Golden Age Nursing Home. She was active in Christian Mothers at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and active in Rib Lake’s Commercial Club. Veronica was affectionately known as Roni to her many friends, whom she loved to have over to visit; and her home was frequently overflowing with out-of-town relatives. She was part of that bygone era where no guest ever left without a good home-cooked meal first. Somehow she managed to always have enough time to care for her big family and still made anyone else who came to her door feel welcomed. In 1974, Francis passed away; and in 1987 Veronica moved to the Wausau area to be closer to her children and their families.
She became a volunteer at Evergreen Elementary School in Kronenwetter and the Aspirus Hospital Gift Shop. She also became active in a seniors bowling league. It was there that she met Richard Carle and shortly after they married on April 22, 1989 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Weston, Wisconsin. She and her husband Richard spent 22 happy years together - bowling, traveling, playing cribbage and visiting with their families. Her husband Richard passed away in January, 2012.
Her entire life, Veronica was always so happy to be with her family and to have visitors. She loved people for who they were and didn’t believe in judging others. She held a firm unshakeable trust in Our Blessed Mother and our Lord. She was a wonderful mother, role model and best friend. She will be sadly missed by us all.
Veronica’s sons and daughters are Carole Blomberg of Estero, Florida; James & Kathy Schaack of Lincoln, California; Gale & James Gilge of Schofield, Wisconsin; Mark & Katie Schaack of Dammeron Valley, Utah; and Mary & Gary Barnett of Schofield, Wisconsin. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. A son, Edward Schaack, and four loving granddaughters preceded her in death.
Veronica’s family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Sylvan Crossing Assisted Living for their compassionate care and special devotion given to Veronica for the past several years. We very much appreciate it.
Hemer Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake are assisting the family with arrangements.

EDNA S. THORNTON
Edna S. Thornton passed away at the age of 99 on January 13, 2016 at Aspirus Nursing and Rehab Center in Medford, Wisconsin where she had resided for the past six years. Edna was born in Bronx, NY in 1916 to Adolph and Josephine Steinbrecher. She was educated in Catholic schools there, eventually graduating from Hunter College in 1935. Following the death of her father in 1932, she lived with, and later cared for, her mother until she passed in 1987. Edna married the love of her life, Paul R. Thornton Jr., in 1938 in New York City where they lived until the war broke out. During the war, Paul was commissioned a Lt. Commander in the US Navy, and the family moved to Pasadena, California. During these years, Edna was employed at Cal Tech doing mathematical research on the Manhattan Project.
When the war ended, the family returned to the suburban New York City area, bought a house in Yonkers, and started a family. Paul 3rd was born in 1946, followed by Peter in 1949. Edna was a homemaker during the 1950s, performing community and charity work, most notably serving as the President of the Westchester County Easter Seals Society. She returned to the workforce in 1960 when she was employed as the supervisor in the Nestles home office's test kitchen in White Plains, NY. Several years later she was employed as an administrative assistant to physicists doing research at Columbia University's Nevis Laboratories in Irvington, NY. While employed there, she completed studies at Columbia, later earning a Master’s Degree in Administration. She was eventually appointed as an officer of Columbia, serving as Administrative Assistant to the President of the University. She held this position until her retirement in 1982.
She then moved to the family's summer home on beautiful Highland Lake in Bridgton, Maine, with her mother, her husband having passed away unexpectedly in 1969. Her years in Maine were again spent doing work for the community. She served on the Bridgton Hospital and Bridgton Library Boards. She was instrumental in helping to start up and operate the Bridgton Hospital Guild's Thrift Shop. While on the Library Board she was instrumental in fundraising events that helped modernize the building and make it more accessible. She was a regular, long-time, and ardent member of a local reading club, the Book Bags. She was also a supporter of various area arts associations. She regularly hosted visiting musicians in her home who came to play with the Sebago-Long Lake Chamber Music Festival during the summer months. She also traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe.
Ill health forced Edna to move finally to Wisconsin in 2003 to be close to her son, Paul, who arranged cancer care for her at the Marshfield Clinic. In 2008, she was declared cured of her second and third bouts with cancer. Through all of her cancer fights (her first bout with breast cancer occurred in 1966), she remained brave and determined. She always proclaimed her trust in "the power of prayer", and her strong Catholic faith always carried her through. That strength proved to be a model for many people over the years.
EDNA ADVOCATED FOR THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN LONG BEFORE IT BECAME FASHIONABLE IN THE 1970S, AND ALWAYs LIVED HER LIFE ACCORDINGLY. SHE MAINTAINED CLOSE TIES WITH HER SORORITY SISTERS FOR DECADES, WAS A SOLID SUPPORTER OF THE PEO MOVEMENT UNTIL HER FINAL YEARS, AND MENTORED MANY WOMEN THROUGHOUT HER LIFE. SHE ALSO RETAINED AN AMAZING SENSE OF HUMOR TO HER LAST DAYS.
Edna is survived by son Paul (Elise), Rib Lake, Wisconsin; son Peter (Linda), Bronxville, NY; grandson Criterion, Brooklyn, NY; granddaughter Genevieve (Grey) Baker, New York City, and their twins, great grandchildren Fleur and Brittin; and granddaughter Ramona (Jeffrey) Thornton and their son, great grandson Oliver of Wales, Wisconsin.
