Alfred Donald Palmer, son of John and Gertrude Palmer was born December 15, 1927.
Al attended Grade School in Polley, Wisconsin, and High School in Gilman Wisconsin.
Al served in WWII 24th Division in the Army as a Military Policeman from 1946-1947.
He returned to his home in Gilman Wisconsin where he had a mail route. He owned a
trailer court for several years. Al became the Sheriff for Taylor County from 1973-1987.
He proudly put his badge on for 14 years. While he was Sherriff, he oversaw the addition of the new jail to the courthouse. He loved to talk about his career as Sheriff
Palmer right up to the end. AI was just an ordinary person facing extraordinary
circumstances and acting with courage, pride, honor and self sacrifice.
Al and Kathy Palmer were married July 24, 1954 they resided in Wisconsin for 59 years.
They both enjoyed traveling to Hot Springs, Arkansas for 20 years during the winter
months. Al enjoyed golfing, watching the Green Bay Packers, coming to Minnesota to
visit his family, the MN State Fair, and going to Gilman to see friends. He liked to go to
the Memorial Hospital cafeteria for mashed potatoes and gravy. He liked to ride his
scooter around town. Go for coffee or lunch with friends in Medford. Al was a member
of the Medford American Legion.
Al Palmer passed away April 8, 2016at Deerview Meadows Assistant Living in Medford
Wisconsin. Al was preceded in death by his parents John and Gertrude (Shookman)
Palmer, two brothers John Palmer and Franklin Palmer, a sister Lois (Tallman) Palmer,
wife Kathleen Palmer, brother-in-law Glen Tallman, niece Patti (Tallman) Nelson.
Al will be deeply missed by his niece Peggy (Tallman) Peterson, husband Phil Peterson,
Ernie Nelson of Isanti, Minnesota. Great Nieces and nephews
Jeremy (Jennifer) Nelson, Bryan (Jacqueline) Nelson, Amy Nelson, Lyndsie Peterson,
Caitlyn (Andy) Jorgenson. Great Great niece and nephews Cody Nelson, Owen Nelson,
Kayla Nelson, close friends Jim (Betsy) Gorichs of Medford, and many friends and neighbors.
A memorial service and military honors for Al Palmer will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday April 13, 2016 at Hemer Funeral Home, Medford. Pastor David Clements will officiate. Cremainal Inurnment will take place in The Town of Ford Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held Wednesday at Hemer Funeral Home, beginning at 10:00 AM until the time of service.
