FLORENCE M. MANN

Florence Marcella Mann, 87, formerly of Rib Lake, passed away Sunday June 26, 2016 at Aspirus Care and Rehab in Medford, where she had been a resident for the past two years.

Florence was born July 5, 1928 in Rib Lake, WI to Leo and Anna (Hoffmann) Thums, and also her stepfather Lawrence Schneider. She graduated from Rib Lake High School in 1946. She then married Andrew Joseph Mann on July 20, 1946 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Rib Lake. Andrew preceded her in death on September 9, 1998.

Florence is survived by her children; Lester (Velma) Mann of Rib Lake, Harvey (Sandra) Mann of Rib Lake, Clifford (Tammy) Mann of Rib Lake, Wayne (Nancy) Mann of Rib Lake, Donna (David) Lind of Phillips, nineteen grandchildren, twenty five great grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren. She is further survived by her siblings; Isabella Wilhelms of Rib Lake and Chester (Louise) Thums of Omro, step sister Patricia Bergles of West Allis, brother in law; Ben Yanko and sister in law; Pauline Thums, and many nieces and nephews.

She is further preceded in death by her Parents, sister Adeline Yanko, step great grandson Joseph Jerdee, brothers Alvin(Audrey) Thums and Elmer (Sarah) Thums, brother in law Walter Wilhelms.

Florence worked on the family dairy farm in the Township of Greenwood, and was a homemaker. She also owned her own upholstery shop for a brief time. She loved to garden, and cook for her family. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, and was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Quilters Club. Florence volunteered for many different organizations including her church, schools and booster clubs throughout the community. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and enjoyed visiting and spending time with them.

Florence was of the Catholic Faith, and a member at Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday July 1, 2016 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Rib Lake, with Father Otto Bucher officiating. Burial will take place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Cemetery in Whittlesey. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM, Thursday June 30, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, with The Rosary being said at 7:00, and also from 10 AM until the time of service at 11 AM, at church.

Memorial donations in honor of Florence M. Mann may be given to her family, for designation at a later date.

LOUISA "LOU" M. HOWSDEN

Louisa "Lou" M. Howsden, age 78, a long-time resident of Medford, Wis., died peacefully on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, with her family present at Jefferson Memory Care in Jefferson, Wis.

Louisa was preceded in death by infant twin sons, her brothers, Archie and Harvey and sisters, Annabelle, Alma and Gertrude. Louisa is survived by her children, Darrel Howsden, Bill Howsden, Sindie Ferguson and Terrie Matthews; brother Earl Hoeck; and sisters Lorraine Hinson, Mary Rudolf, Grace Brehm, Pauline Brehm and Joan Brehm. Louisa has 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Louisa was born September 26, 1937, to Charles and Verna (Ehlert) Hoeck in Hewett Township, Clark County, Wis. Louisa grew up in the Medford area yet maintained strong ties and spent most summers with her extended family in the Thorp area. Louisa was a 1956 graduate of Medford Senior High School.

During her life, Louisa was a mother, a farmer, an art student, a factory worker, an operator of a painting and whitewashing business, a bus driver – and all of the other trades involved in keeping a farm running.

Louisa enjoyed the outdoors, nature and wildlife. Never one to be caught indoors if there was work to be done outside, she was well suited to the farming life. Louisa was still raising animals and splitting firewood in her mid 70s.

Louisa was an independent, fiercely proud and sometimes stubborn woman with deeply held convictions. Those who knew her would say the same thing.

The visitation / memorial service will be held Saturday, July 9th, 2016, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at HEMER FUNERAL HOME in Medford, Wis. In keeping with her wishes, there will be a private time for the family to spread her ashes.

LESTER E. CARLSON

 

Lester E. Carlson, 91, currently of Marshfield, formerly of Medford, passed away Friday June 24, 2016 at Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. Lester was born February 9, 1925 in the Township of Holway, Wisconsin to David and Ruth (Larson) Carlson.  He married Laura H. Lang on August 5, 1949 in Iowa City, IA. Laura preceded Lester in death December 19, 2009.

       Lester joined the US Army in March of 1943, and served a 3 year enlistment. He was stationed in Italy, and was assigned to the 10^th Mountain Division, and was a Ski Instructor, and also a gun serviceman. In 1947, upon his return from the war he joined the Carpenters Union in Illinois and Wisconsin and was a member for over 65 years. In 1955, they built a house for the family in Arlington Heights, and Elgin. In 1972, the family returned to Central Wisconsin. Through the carpenters union he worked for many different contractors as a residential carpenter. He also owned a dairy farm in Unity. Lester enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid Cubs, Brewers, and Packers fan. He was very proud of his family, especially his eight daughters.

     He was a Lifelong Member of the Medford VFW Post 5729, a Colby VFW Post 2227, where he served as Post Commander for both, Chequamegon Bird Club, Taylor County Historical Society, The United Church of Christ, Medford.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday June 28, 2016 at The United Church of Christ in Medford. Pastor Mary Jo Laabs will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 AM until the time of service at 11 AM. Burial and military honors will follow at Medford Evergreen Cemetery II.

HELYN K. (RUGE) HEIER

Born to Edgar and Helen Ruge, January 24, 1915

 

On June 22, 2016, our Helyn passed away of natural causes. Survivors include seven children, 5 boys and 2 girls; sons David (Darlene Tomczyk) Heier, Gregory (Maureen Ackeret) Heier, Tracy (Kathy Wilcox) Heier, Neal “Bud” Heier, Stuart ”Bomber”(Laura Potaczak) Heier all of Medford; daughters Camille  (Willard) Anderson of Wausau, Edith (Robert)  Hoock of Abbotsford; Twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren.

Helyn was preceded in death by her husband Alfred “Fritz” Heier in December 1976, her daughter-in-law Nora (Zerngible) Heier in April 2001, brother Ernie and two sisters Elaine and Dorothy.

 

Services for Helyn will take place at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford with Father Phil Juza and Deacon Joseph Stefancin officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until time of services Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Interment will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford. Pallbearers will be Willard & Eric Anderson, Robert Hoock, Shizue Teal, Wyatt & Rachael Heier.

 

Helyn was born in the Town of Little Black. She married Fritz Heier on August 20, 1939. Helyn and Fritz purchased a farm in the Town of Little Black on a Land Contract, starting from scratch having to purchase a dairy herd, machinery and remodel a farmhouse with no running water, electricity or insulation.

 

Helyn attended Holy Rosary Catholic School in Medford and graduated from Medford High School. Helyn then attended the Green Bay State Vocational School earning a degree in accounting and business.

Helyn’s career began as a receptionist/stenographer for the State Civil Service-Wefare Department later being appointed State Assistant Court Reporter and a court reporter for the various courts for Taylor County.

After thirty years, Helyn retired and became a free-lance court reporter for several Attorneys in Taylor County. She also did free-lance tax accounting. 

Helyn did all this while raising seven children; her motto being “Family First”. Helyn did find time for enjoyment. She liked the challenge of a good game of bridge, playing bridge in several clubs and the bridge marathon over the years. Knitting and sewing were a necessity as well as a craft and hobby. Roses were Helyn’ favorite flower and she always had rose bushes blooming in the yard all summer.  Two special places Helyn had traveled to were to the Vatican in Rome and  LasVegas to see the Liberachi show. She never missed the Liberachi or the Lawrence Welk weekly show on TV.

After Fritz died in 1976, Helyn embarked on her second thirty-year career as Administrative Assistant and Accountant at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, retiring in 2008. Since then, she had been busy hosting family get-togethers, playing cards and hunting down bargains at garage and estate sales.

PRINCIPLE EVENTS IN LIFE: After high school, Sylvia worked for several small cafes in Iowa. She then moved to Stratford, WI where she worked as a manager for Family Dollar in Colby. In 2001, Sylvia owned and operated Hannah’s Hen House in Edgar. Sylvia and Tom then farmed for a short period of time before opening Hannah’s Hen House in Rib Lake in August of 2014. She loved to collect chicken memorabilia and key chains, attend auctions and her children’s events and concerts. Sylvia was a die-hard Iowa Hawk Eye fan, she liked to bake, cook, watch the sunset and she loved spending time with her family and friends.

PRINCIPLE EVENTS IN LIFE: Norman grew up on a dairy farm in the Town of Holway. Following high school, Norman enlisted in the US Army. He then served in Germany for two years, where he was a Jeep Mechanic and driver in the Motorpool. Upon returning home, he worked briefly for Hurd Window Company, and also drove milk and logging truck. Norman worked construction on Highway 41, heading south out of Milwaukee, and drove the cement roller. He then worked as a welder for American Motor Company in Kenosha. Norman and Carol moved to Curtiss, WI and worked for Packaging Company of America where he was employed for 32 years, and retired in the mid 1990’s. Norman loved to bird and deer hunt with the “Olson Gang.” He had a passion for mechanics, and became quite skilled. He thoroughly enjoyed polka music. He and Carol would often attend polka concerts and dances throughout Wisconsin. Norman loved his family, and will always be remembered as a humble and patient man, who was an excellent example of a Husband, Father and Grandfather.

PRINCIPLE EVENTS IN LIFE: Kevin worked at Weather Shield for 35 years and Wal-Mart for 10 until his retirement. Kevin enjoyed golf and cribbage with his brothers and friends, as well as his annual fishing trip with his brothers.

MEMBER OF: Kevin was a member of the Senior Golf League at The Black River Golf Course and cribbage league at B.S. Catering. He was a past member of various softball leagues, bowling leagues, and foosball leagues.

SURVIVING BROTHERS/SISTERS: Sharon (Michael) Thomas of Appleton, Sandra Huck of Bohemia, N.Y., Lynette (Keith) Tate of Eagan, Minn, David “Hutch” (Melinda), Joe, Tim, Jim, and Mark "Shark" Brahmer,all of Medford.

SURVIVING NIECES: Jackie, Lisa, Dawn, Tami, Kerry, Stephanie, Marissa, and Erin

SURVIVING NEPHEWS: Brent, Bryan, Jeff, Jason, and Nathan

PRINCIPLE EVENTS IN LIFE: She worked as a bookkeeper at Strebig Auto in Medford, a secretary at the Medford Junior High School & she worked in Payroll at Weather Shield in Medford for periods of time. She enjoyed sewing, reading and spending time at the lake.
