Alvin Liske,
age 90, a town of Browning resident died on Tuesday, May 28 at Aspirus Medford
Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Alvin was
born January 5, 1929 at the family home in the town of Browning, the son of Emanuel & Mary (Frey) Liske . He graduated from Birchwood School and Medford
High School in 1947. He also attended
and completed several training courses over the years. He married Edna Alice Miller on October 4,
1952 at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Medford and she preceded him in death on February
7, 2016.
With the
help of his family, they owned/operated a 560 acre dairy farm in the town of
Browning from 1948 until 1991. They
planted 250,000 trees and built three fish and wildlife ponds. While farming, he worked as an insurance
agent for Mutual Service Insurance from 1961-1986, Little Black Mutual
Insurance from 1961-2000, worked at Strebig Auto, Steel Structures and worked
as the Town of Browning highway superintendent from 1956-1961. He was a census bureau crew leader, clerk at
Birchwood School from 1950 to 1958, served as chairman of school consolidation
committee, was first president of newly formed Medford Area School Board from
1961 to 1973, and helped develop the Medford school forest. In 1978 he received the State Wildlife Award. Alvin was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran
Church where he served on the church council and was the financial secretary.
On February
22, 1954, Alvin entered the neighbor’s burning home and rescued the mother and three
children. He then received the Medford
Chamber of Commerce award in recognition of bravery and heroism. Alvin loved the outdoors, nature, trapping,
hunting and fishing.
Alvin served
on the board of directors of Taylor Electric Co-op for periods of time while
holding various positions during his 33 years on the board. He served as secretary/treasurer for the
Taylor County Association of Cooperatives from 1955 to 1960, along with
director of the board of Taylor Credit Union from 1962 to 2001.
Survivors
include his children, Donald (Sandy) Liske of Medford, Mark Liske of Duluth, MN,
6 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren & his brother, Roland (Ila) Liske
of New Berlin. He was preceded in death
by his parents, wife, daughter Shirley
in 2010, siblings, Edmund, Raymond & Marvin Liske, Lillian Wanker,
Helen Miller & Ester Billows.
Funeral
services for Alvin will be on Monday, June 3 at 11 AM at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran
Church, Medford with Rev. Jeffrey Mahnke officiating. Visitation will be from 9 AM until the time
of services at 11 AM at the church that morning. Burial will take place at Medford Evergreen
II Cemetery.
In lieu of
flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given to Immanuel Ev. Lutheran
