Roy was fondly known as the “Candy Man.” When most people were thinking about
retirement, Roy went to work pumping gas in Medford where he gave thousands of
Werther’s Original candies to patrons and their children.
Roy was born September 4, 1925 in Chicago, IL to Frank and
Bernice Jaslowski. When he was 3 years
old the family moved to Medford where his father ran a one-pump gas station and
farmed west of Medford on Highway 64.
Roy attended grade school and his first two years of high school in
Medford before the family moved back to Chicago. Roy’s mother was in ill health
and wanted to be closer to her family in Chicago. Roy graduated from Crane Technical
Highschool, Chicago, before being drafted in the Navy. After
serving in the Navy during WWII, he returned to Chicago and worked at Western
Electric as a draftsman for six years before returning to Medford where he met
and married Mabel Christophersen.
Roy bought the farm his wife grew up on in the town of
Hammel. Together they farmed until her death in 1971 of cancer. They had four children: Frank, Carol (Lekies), Peter and Mary
(Dall). In his spare time, he enjoyed
fly fishing.
In addition to farming, Roy served on the board of directors
for the Medford Cooperative, Taylor Electric Cooperative, The Dairyland Power
Board, ASCS, and Our Saviour’s Church Council. In 2009 Roy received the employee excellence award
from the Medford Area Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his
wife Mabel, his sister Annette, and daughter Mary. He is survived by his
children, Frank, Carol (Gordon) Lekies, and Peter. Surviving grandchildren include Joshua
Jaslowski, Dr. Angela Brost D.D.S., Christopher Brost, Amy Brost and 8 great
grandchildren.
In leu of flowers at Roy’s request, memorials should
designated to either Our Saviour’s Lutheran Chruch of Holway or Hope Hospice in
his name.
