PRINCIPLE EVENTS IN LIFE: For most of her life she worked as a homemaker & mother. She worked for periods of time at Hurd Millwork, State Bank of Medford and with her husband in the insurance business. She enjoyed photography, bird watching, camping, sewing, knitting, embroidery, fishing and, most of all, her son’s and their families.

MEMBER OF: United Methodist Church, Medford where she was a past Sunday school teacher, active in the Women’s Circles, Keen Agers, sang in its church choir & was active in Bible studies.

EVELYN A. MARCOTT

Evelyn A. Marcott, 93, of Dorchester, died March 18, 2018 at Dycora Nursing Home in Abbotsford under the care of Ministry St. Joseph Hospice.
She was born May 29, 1924 in Medford, Wisconsin to Fred and Mary (Ackeret) Goerg. She attended Holy Rosary Catholic Grade School and graduated from Medford High School.
Evelyn married Kenneth Marcott on May 29, 1948 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford. He precedes her in death. They moved to Dorchester in 1949.
Evelyn is survived by three sons: Gary of Bonduell, David (Nancy) of Athens, Tom (Rhonda) of Spencer, 7 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren and one sister Marie Brecke of Florida.
She is further preceded in death by her Parents, one son: Mark, two Brothers: Clarence and Ray Goerg, and two brothers and one sister in infancy.
Evelyn worked at the Star News in Medford, and then worked as the secretary for Dorchester Elementary School for 31 years. She loved sewing, quilt making, reading and spending time with her family and friends.
She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Dorchester, and the Quilting Club.
Cremation rites have been accorded and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday March 23, 2018 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Dorchester. Father Tim Oudenhoven and Father Schaefer will officiate. Burial will take place in the Spring of 2018 at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford. Visitation will be held Friday morning at the church from 10:00 until the time of service at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Evelyn can be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.

EILEEN J. HANDEL

Eileen Joan Handel, 88, of Medford passed away on March 17, 2018 surrounded by loved ones. A funeral mass will take place on Friday, March 23 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford at 12 noon with Father Phil Juza officiating. Visitation will take place Friday from 10:30 AM until time of services at the church. Urnbearers will be Brittany Zenner and Julian and Margaret Handel.

Eileen was born on August 10, 1929 to Leo J. and Theresa M. (Brost) Hirsch in Medford. She attended Holy Rosary School and graduated from Medford High School in 1947. Eileen was also a graduate of Taylor County Normal School. After her education, she taught elementary school in Abbotsford and at the Mathey School in rural Medford for three years.

On June 15, 1953, Eileen married Gerald “Jerry” Handel at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. They enjoyed 51 years of life together. He preceded her in death on February 25, 2005.

After marriage, Eileen worked as a homemaker and mother. She was also a substitute teacher at Holy Rosary Catholic School. Eileen actively enjoyed boating, golfing, curling, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, walking and biking. In her younger years, she drove stock car with Jerry. Her competitive spirit earned her the nickname “Mean Eileen.” Eileen took pride in her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. In later years, Eileen was an active member of a caregiver support group and was instrumental in creating a support group for people with visual impairments.

Eileen was a devoted Catholic and member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford. She was a past member of the Medford Curling Club, Homemaker’s Club and Birthday Club.

Eileen was the proud mother of Kathleen “Kate” (Steve) Metz, Mike (Rhonda) Handel, both of Medford, and Gary (Jane) Handel of Austin, MN and a loving grandmother to Christian, Julian (Dana) and Margaret Handel, Jared Metz and Brittany (M.J.) Zenner. Her great-grandson, Mason Zenner, brought her great joy, and she was anxiously awaiting the arrival of another great-grandbaby in July.

Eileen is survived by two brothers, Leo James Hirsch of Barrington Hills, IL and Patrick Hirsch of Lake Bluff, IL, one sister, Marguerite (Ray) Klingbeil of Medford, three sister-in-laws: Bernice Hirsch of Sparta, Joan Hirsch of Pensacola, FL and Arlene Handel of Medford and numerous nieces and nephews. Eileen was preceded in death by brothers, Peter, Mark and John “Jacky” Hirsch; sister, Marilyn Strassman; sister-in-laws, Geraldine, Edna and Lorraine Hirsch, Marian Hansen and brother-in-laws, Ray Strassman, Robert Hansen, and Roger Handel.

VIRGINIA A. CHING

Virginia A. Ching, 78, of Stetsonville, passed away Thursday March 15, 2018 at Care Partners in Medford, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice.
Virginia was born November 3, 1939 in Marshfield, WI to Joseph and Minnie (Thomsen) Boeck. She is a 1957 graduate of Medford High School. She married Ron Ching on August 15, 1964 in Whittlesey, WI. Ron precedes her in death.
She is survived by her Children: Allan (Laura) Ching of Stetsonville, Steven Ching of Stetsonville, Michelle “Weasy” (Max) LaPorte of Medford, 5 Granddaughters: Misti, Mindy, Danielle, Malia, Kiah, 2 Great Granddaughters: Madison, Lillian, Siblings: Jack Boeck of Medford and Kathy (Joe) Retterath of Stetsonville, numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family in Hawaii.
She is preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, and Infant Brother William.
Virginia worked at the Medford Co-Op for over 40 years as a cashier, frozen food manager and scanning department. She retired from there in 2013. She enjoyed going to her children and grandchildren’s sporting events, and never missed one. Virginia enjoyed taking bus trips and traveling, especially to Hawaii to visit her husband’s family. She was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and like to play cards and visit every morning with her daily coffee clutch.
Virginia was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stetsonville.
Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday March 31, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Stetsonville. Father Michael Hayden will officiate. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of service.

WORK INFORMATION/PRINCIPAL EVENTS IN LIFE: Homemaker and mother. Resided and raised children for a long time in Basswood WI before returning to the Westboro area. A long time employee of Hope Hospice Medford Wi. She loved to travel visiting Ireland, London and Paris and she made numerous trips to canoe in the Boundary Waters with her niece Cindy Ludwig and her family. She loved her trips to the Yak in the Montana Rockies to visit her brother Dan.


HOBBIES/SPECIAL INTERESTS: Gardening, quilting, embroidery, baking, break making. Raised sheep and chickens for years. She was proud of her Irish ancestry and took an interest in Irish and Celtic culture. She loved camping, hiking, canoeing anything that got here out in a rustic area. She was also a member of the Whittlesey Quilters who make quilts for charity.

DENNIS J. NAWRACAJ

Dennis J. Nawracaj, 78, of Rib Lake, passed away at his home Monday March 12, 2018.
Dennis was born December 12, 1939 in Chicago, IL to John and Frances (Andraciewicz) Nawracaj. He attended and graduated from Colby High School in 1959.
Dennis is survived by his Sister: Diana Sand, Niece Danielle (Kenneth) Johns, Great Nephew Ryan McAdams, Great Nieces Emily Johns, all of Rockford, IL, and many other family members in Wisconsin and Illinois.
After high school Dennis worked on the family farm in Unity, WI and was then drafted into the US Army and was stationed in Ft. Gordon, Georgia. Following the military he moved to Illinois with his family. He then became superintendent of the Parks and Recreation of Glendale Heights, IL, where he retired from. He then moved to Rib Lake to enjoy his retirement.
Dennis loved to play cards with his friends, he was a member of several bowling leagues in Illinois, and an avid Chicago sports fan. He loved to watch old western movies, especially John Wayne, and had a collection of John Wayne memorabilia.
He served as Rib Lake Village president for one year.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday March 16, 2018 at Hemer Funeral Home, Medford Chapel. Military Rites will be rendered. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Colby. Visitation will take place on Friday, March 16, 2018 at Hemer Funeral Home, Medford Chapel from 9:30 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM.

JAMES A. "SHORTY" BERGER

James A. “Shorty” Berger, 84, of Medford, passed away Monday March 12, 2018 at his home.

James was born October 26, 1933 to August and Mathilda (Zimmerman) Berger in Medford. He is a 1951 graduate of Medford Sr. High School.

After high school James enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Supply Handler. He was honorably discharged in 1955. He returned to Wisconsin and worked at AMC Plant in Janesville, GM Motors in Milwaukee, and then Weather Shield Window Company in Medford, where he retired from.

He loved to attend auto auctions, gun shows, traveling and tinkering with cars and motors.

James is survived by a sister Estelle Oldeberg, and many other nieces, nephews and family members.

Per James request, cremation rites have been accorded and a graveside service with military rites will take place at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, July, 28, 2018. A meal will follow at Holy Rosary Social Center.
